Position Description:
This summer internship is an opportunity to work in a professional government planning office engaged in multiple aspects of community planning, including transportation, land use, zoning, housing rehabilitation, stormwater, and floodplain planning.
The Planning intern will contribute to projects involving GIS data analysis, field inspections, environmental review, and document production while gaining exposure to zoning amendments, FEMA mapping, erosion control, and local governance procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Regular, reliable attendance and professional representation of Licking County Government
- GIS-based data creation, analysis, visualization, and mapping
- Support ArcGIS Online mapping and web updates
- Update zoning maps and assist with document preparation
- Assist with environmental data collection (wetlands, streams, floodplains)
- Conduct field visits to construction and environmental sites
- Learn to interpret FEMA flood maps and construction documents
- Assist Compliance Planner with code enforcement monitoring
- Participate in planning meetings, trainings, and community presentations
- Support document archiving and digital file organization
- Remain current on planning practices, software, and safety standards
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Junior, Senior, or Graduate student pursuing a degree in Urban Planning, Geography, GIS, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Data Analytics, or Public Administration (preferred)
- Intermediate to advanced GIS proficiency highly preferred
- Experience with ArcGIS Online, Story Maps, and basic website editing (preferred)
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) desirable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to conduct independent fieldwork, sometimes in rough or wet terrain
Additional Qualifications (Agency/Dept.):
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License required
- Must be eligible for coverage under county fleet vehicle liability insurance
